Increase Your Wi-Fi Signal Strength with a Foil

Are you looking for ways to increase the signal strength of that wireless router in your home without having to invest in a Wifi extender?

Then head over to the kitchen and grab some Aluminum foil that is normally used by mom for cooking or for wrapping sandwiches so that they stay fresh a little longer.

Tear off some foil in the shape of a rectangle, give it a curve and then place the foil behind the antenna of your router. This will reflect the wireless signals into your preferred directions.

If the router is mounted on a wall, you can make holes in the Aluminium foil and insert it inside the antennas as shown in the following video.

How to Disable and Remove OGA Office Genuine Advantage (Uninstall KB949810)

After installing Office Genuine Advantage (OGA) Notifications (KB949810) from Windows Update, OGA Validation will perform genuine test on installed Microsoft Office XP, Office 2003, Office 2007 and Office 2010 software. If Office product is validated as not genuine, “This copy of Microsoft Office is not genuine” notification message will be displayed on notification area (system tray), at splash screen during Office program (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) startup, and at Office’s toolbar or ribbon with extra “Get Genuine Office” tab or element.

KB949810 OGA Notifications update is designed so that end-user cannot uninstall or removed the update using “Add and Remove Programs” or “Program and Features” in the Control Panel, in a bid to encourage end-users to buy genuine Microsoft products. But, if you’re a legit Office users, and the OGA validation has returned false-positive result, use the one of the following hacks to disable and remove Microsoft Office not genuine notification messages displayed by OGA Notifications
Note: Hack below simply remove and disable OGA Notifications so that no notification message about Office not genuine is not displayed, and works on most versions of OGA Notifications. It doesn’t crack or patch OGA Validation component, OGACheckControl.dll, which does the validation process to determine if the Office product is genuine or not.

Hack 1: Disable OGAAddin.dll from Loading with Office Applications
OGAAddin.dll (and OGAVerify.exe) is a few files that been installed by OGA Notifications. OGAAddin.dll allowed OGA Notifications to install as an add-in to applications in Office productivity suites to display not genuine reminder message to illegitimate and illegal copy of Office. By stopping the OGAAddin load behavior and preventing OGAAddin.dll from loading, the Office Genuine Advantage Notifications message can be suppressed.
  1. Run Registry Editor (RegEdit.exe).
  2. Press Ctrl-F to open search box, and search for OGAAddin.connect registry key.
  3. In the right pane, right click on Load Behavior and select Modify.
  4. Change the value data from 3 to 0.
  5. Repeat for each and every OGAAddin.connect found.
With this hack, Windows still treat OGA as installed, and will not prompt user to install again.
Hack 2: Disable and Remove OGAAddin from within Office Applications
  1. Run one of the Office app such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Publisher and etc as administrator.

Note: Open Windows Explorer, go to %SystemDrive%\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12 (may be different depends on version of Office installed and x64 OS uses Program Files (x86) folder), and right click on Office app executable, e.g. winword.exe, excel.exe, powerpnt.exe and etc to run as administrator.

  2. Go to Options (at the bottom of menu triggered by Office button) -> Add-Ins.
  3. Select COM Add-ins under Manage drop menu list, and click Go.

  4. Disable or remoev the OGAAdmin.
  5. Repeat above steps for each and every Office applications installed.
Hack 3: Delete and Remove (Uninstall) Office Genuine Advantage Notifications Components
Although Microsoft does not allow OGA Notifications to be uninstall, but that does not mean that individual file components of OGA Notifications cannot be deleted, removed or uninstalled manually.
To disable OGA Notifications and uninstall KB949810, close and exit from all Office applications (including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Publisher, Visio and etc.), and search for the following files in %SystemDrive%\Wndows\System32 folder and %SystemDrive%\Windows\SysWow64 folder (for 64-bit OS x64 only).

OGAVerify.exe

OGAAddin.dll
Delete the above files. It’s also possible rename the files so that system cannot find them.

Hack 4: Remove OGAAddin.connect Registry Key in System Registry
Pretty much similar to method 1 and 2, but it’s quicker and will complete remove trace of OGAAddin.connect from registry. Unlike hack 1, Windows Update may prompt you to install again.
  1. Run Registry Editor (RegEdit.exe).
  2. Go to each and every of the following registry keys, and any other which contains OGAAddin.connect registry value sub-key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Word\Addins

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Excel\Addins

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Powerpoint\Addins

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Outlook\Addins

  3. Delete the OGAAddin.connect registry value.
Hack 5: Properly Uninstall KB949810 OGA Notification via OGANotifier.msi
Tip by AnonyMouse

Easy to uninstall. Just follow these steps:
  1. Go to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\8998da55d52b36c0e98ba016ddd50de0\ folder or Download Here

Note: The directory may be different, so if not found search for OGANotifier.cab.

  2. Extract OGANotifier.cab with WinRAR (or using the Expand command at command line) to get a file named OGANotifier.msi.
  3. Right click on OGANotifier.msi, and select Uninstall.
  4. Remember to block the update from been installed again in WU.
There is also an official Windows Installer method of uninstalling OGA, Belt-and-Braces approach submitted by one of the reader, shown below:
  1. Remove ‘Office/Windows Genuine Advantage’ from Office Programs:

    • Word / Excel / PowerPoint / Access

Quick Access Toolbar – More Commands – Add Ins – Manage ‘Comm Add Ins’ – Go – Remove OGA Add In

    • Outlook / Visio

Tools – Trust Centre – Add Ins – Manage ‘Comm Add Ins’ – Manage – Go – Remove OGA Add In

  2. Reboot into Windows ‘Safe Mode’
  3. Rename in \windows\system32 (by adding .bak to end of file)

    • LegitCheckControl.dll (create empty file)
    • OGAAddin.dll (create empty file)
    • OGACheckControl.dll (create empty file)
    • OGAExec.exe (create empty file)
    • WgaTray.exe (create empty file)
    • WgaLogon.dll (create empty file)

  4. Edit Registry (Navigate to WgaLogon folder)

    1. HKey Local Machine
    2. Software
    3. Microsoft
    4. Windows NT
    5. Current Version
    6. Winlogon
    7. Notify
    8. DELETE Wgalogon folder

  5. Disable OGALogon Task

    1. \Windows\tasks
    2. Select OGALogon and the ‘Properties’
    3. On Task Tab
    4. Disable as follows (Uncheck):

      • Run only if logged on
      • Enabled (Scheduled task runs at specified time)

    5. On Settings Tab
    6. Disable as follows (Check):

Delete the task if it is not scheduled to run again

  6. Restart Windows Normally
  7. Block Programs in Firewall (Prevents running IF there is an automatic Update)

    • OGAExec.exe **create empty file (If not done in 3)
    • WgaTray.exe **create empty file (If not done in 3)

With any one of the hacks above, no more Office Genuine Advantage notification message will be displayed and showed on system, regardless of genuine status of the Office software, unless of course, end-user chooses to reinstall KB949810.

Tips For Sending Valid E-mails From Websites

E-mails are one of the key elements of a website/web application. They are used in contact forms, sign-ups, notifications, newsletters, etc.
It is a common experience that sometimes e-mails sent from websites go to the junk folders or never reach.

Although it is not always possible to detect the reasons for this, there are several things that we can do to minimize the risk. Here they are:

Send E-mails Through A Valid E-mail Server With Authentication

This is the most important one which you may be automatically offering all the tips below.
It is mostly a good idea to send website e-mails through the e-mail server that will require authentication rather than the web server's SMTP server. Servers that are specifically set to send e-mails generally have Reverse DNS & SPF records, support greylisting ,etc.
Every scripting language offers methods to send e-mails with authentication.

On the other hand, sometimes, using e-mail servers are not enough as you may need to send lots of e-mails but the hosting provider may be applying limits, etc. In such cases, if you'll be sending e-mails through your web server, make sure to check these all:

Reverse DNS (rDNS)

As every domain resolves to an IP address, optionally, IPs can resolve to domain names which is called reverse DNS.
Many spammers use non-existing or dynamic e-mails without reverse DNS records. E-mail servers generally check if the sender IP has a reverse DNS record or not.
How to add reverse DNS records?: reverse resolving uses the pointer DNS record type (PTR record) which you should be asking your hosting provider to create it (check if it exists).

SPF Records

Sender Policy Framework is being used by more & more e-mail providers everyday (Gmail, Hotmail & Yahoo uses it) as a criteria to detect if a message is spam or not.
It simply allows the owner of a domain to specify their mail sending policy, (like which mail servers they use to send mail from their domain).
SPF records are DNS TXT records which an online setup wizard can help you creating it (you'll need to create new DNS records).

Using A SMTP Server That Supports Greylisting

A very powerful spam prevention method used by mail servers is called greylisting.
When you send an e-mail, the server receiving it can say to your SMTP server:  "send it to me again in x minutes" which is mostly not supported by the methods spammers use.
So, you need a smart SMTP server who can understand this command (IIS SMTP can not) that will re-send the e-mails when requested.

No Bulk Mailing

Both the SMTP server you'll be sending e-mails & the servers that will receive them generally have rules to define an IP/e-mail as spammer who sends x number of mails in y seconds.

So, if you have a large userbase to send e-mail, it will be a good idea to send them in intervals.

No Sending Of E-mails In Alphabetical Order

Again, if you'll be sending e-mails to a large userbase, don't send them in alphabetical order of e-mails as mail servers can mark them as a dictionary attack.

Check If The Server IP Is Blacklisted

Blacklists are systems, that are used by most of the e-mail service providers, that has bot or human e-mail accounts which analyze the common e-mail traffic & can blacklist IPs according to e-mails sent from them.

The server you're using to send e-mails can be shared by many other users. And, a spam that is sent by anyone on that server can lead to a "blocking" by e-mail blacklists which will damage the communication of every account on it.
You can check if you IP is blacklisted from different resources.

Free Proxy Service for Anonymous Browsing – PaperBus

Finding new working ways for anonymous browsing is always a challenge, especially in countries like China where the government itself takes the initiative to block websites and also services that promise to provide means to access blocked websites.

There is a new way for you to browse the internet freely and luckily it is FREE as well! PaperBus is the latest ad-supported free web-browser proxy solution from the makers of commercial VPN service Freedur

PaperBus is pretty slick and easy to use. The best thing about the service is that it is really fast and requires no registration whatsoever. All you have to do is just download the Windows/Mac/Linux PaperBus proxy-client app and you are all set to browse the net anonymously from almost any web-browser, avoiding all the prying eyes including the Great Firewall.

Normally, the free proxy solutions are very slow, and do not load AJAX or java script heavy sites. Most of them do not support HTTPS connections and the application itself is usually bloated with ads. But PaperBus works like a charm – its fast, easy-to-use and seamless. There will be an odd popup of an ad every twenty minutes or so, but then it is Free!

PaperBus was launched 21st of January 2010 and hopes to become a serious contender to Hotspot Shield, Ultrasurf, Tor, NotMyIP and other free online anonymity applications. It works both for Internet Explorer and Firefox. I hope PaperBus stays on as a viable free solution similar to other Free VPN services available.

Easiest Way to Change Windows 7 DNS Settings

A self proclaimed geek like me found it a bit tricky the first time I tried to change the DNS settings in Windows 7. Of course it is not a complicated process, but no one would mind an easier way to change the DNS settings especially when you are someone who would like to change the preferred DNS every now and then.
As you might know, Google recently launched a public DNS service which claimed to be better than any other free DNS services like OpenDNS. They even claimed to be faster than OpenDNS. Anyway, here is a free tool that lets you change your DNS settings in a single click – DNS Jumper!

The best part about DNS Jumper is – it’s free, portable and easy-to-use. Just run the application and click on the desired DNS service button and it’ll immediately change your system DNS settings.
It has pre-configures DNS settings for:
  • Google DNS
  • Open DNS
  • Comodo DNS
  • Advantage DNS
  • Ultra DNS
  • DNS 8 to 16
The rest of the options are your default DNS, Open NIC and you can set the DNS just by a single click. Other than Windows 7, it works on Windows Vista and XP too.

Excel Password Remover 2010

Have you ever forgotten your Excel workbook or sheet password?

Here you can download a FREE Excel add-in that removes/cracks sheet and workbook password protection in Excel®.

NB! This program can't remove file protection, i.e. if you are unable to open the file, this program won't help you. You could try Excel Key to remove file protection. If you need to crack the VBA-password try this one.

This Excel add-in (password.xla) works fine in Excel 5.0 and above (including Excel 2000, XP and 2003).

This program will remove passwords of any length, also passwords containing special characters.

Instructions
Loading this add-in in Excel gives you two extra menu-items on the "Tools"-menu (or equivalent in non-English versions of Excel). These are:
  1. Unprotect workbook
  2. Unprotect sheet
To load this add-in in Excel: Open it the same way you do with Excel workbooks. Installing the add-in does not work for all users.

Ultimate Guide to Secure Your GMail Account

The most widely used free email service is from Google which has occupied proficient and prominent position in the cloud. GMAIL – The free email service from Google with enough storage space to keep your communications intact through years and years. Since Gmail is widely used mail service, security concerns are primarily of respect and main focus. Hence here in this post, we’ll share  a few important and useful Gmail security tips so that our accounts shall never be compromised.

1. Always Use HTTPS – This is a great feature from security point of view in Gmail. HTTPS is secure protocol for transmission of vital information on web in encrypted form. Although, when we sign into our Gmail account, https is used but to make sure https is used throughout our session for our Gmail account, we need to enable this option from Gmail settings. To enable this option, go to settings of your Gmail account and check “Always use HTTPS” under general tab and save changes. HTTPS makes mail little slower than normal but security should be of our prime concern.

2. Remember to log out – Log out whenever you have completed checking mails even if you’re on your own computer. If you’re on public computer like in cyber cafe, make sure you had unchecked “Remember me” or “keep me signed in” option while logging into account. Clear cookies, passwords before leaving public PC.

3. Audit – You know your own ip address. Now find out the ip address from where your Gmail account was opened last time. In the footer, at the very bottom of your inbox, you will see information about last sessions – Last activity : ip address : Details . Just hit on details button and you can see when was your account accessed and from which ip address.

You can also use this feature there to log out all sessions if you find any session open or if you forgot to log out on your friend’s pc or public computers. One should make habit of checking/ auditing Gmail account session details regularly.

3. Don’t disclose – Don’t disclose your id and password to anybody. You might get fake email asking for your Gmail id and password, but remember,  Google never asks you to disclose your password. Stay safe. Also, some websites have features to invite your Gmail contacts to network with you on their website, for this they ask you to enter your Gmail id and password – Don’t give your Gmail details to untrusted or small or new , unestablished websites .

4. Change your password – Once in two months or so, you should change your password but remember the new one!! Don’t use easy to guess password i.e. don’t use your mobile number, date of birth, your girlfriend’s number as your password! Use password of at least 8 characters. Don’t use repetitive letters in passwords as aaaa1111. Don’t use your Gmail account password as passwords on other websites. I find many people use the same password for variety of websites so if one of your passwords is hacked, all are hacked.

5. Check linksDon’t fall prey to phishing attempt. Your so called friend might give you a link stating that it the link to new and feature packed advanced Gmail, you then try to log onto the link given by your friend and your friend gets your id and password. So always check links before hitting on any such links.

6. Keep your account up to date – Your Gmail password is your orkut password and the same password is used for other Google products and services, hence ensure security updates and measures in all your accounts so that neither way, your account could be compromised. Keep your account recovery option updated and remember your security question and answer so that you can recover your password in case if something wrong happens. Although, after reading this post and following accordingly, such unfortunate case is nowhere to stand. You can also add phone number to account for recovery purposes. To review your gmail recovery options, follow this link: GMail account recovery options

7. Use updated internet security suite (Antivirus, Firewall, Antispyware) on your pc - This point is also very important because your computer might have been compromised by a trojan, keylogger or virus which may distribute your account details to remote hacker. Update your browser, operating system, security softwares, mail applications so that you should not be vulnerable to latest exploits and hacks.

8. Attachments – Gmail scans every attachment you receive or send for virus or other such kind of threats but even then, it is not advised to download attachments from untrusted source. This will keep your computer safe and so your account.

9. Spam – Don’t waste your time reading spam messages. Spam messages are not only waste of time but also may prove to be a security concern as spams may contain links to malicious websites.

10. Backup – Well, backup would be useful in case of recovery of your account if your account had been compromised. Although this point is not a necessary step, yet you can backup all your gmail mails to make your life easy! One such tool to backup gmail is – Download GMAIL Backup tool

FAQ’s – Ask your concern through comments!

Is basic HTML view less secure ?
Ans - No. Basic HTMl view is for faster access to mails. It has to do nothing with security.

My friend sent a mail to another friend from my email address. Does it mean, my account is compromised ?
Ans Not exactly but may be. There is a technique through which we can send email so that it looks sent from another desired email address to recipient but such emails could be identified by viewing its headers whether it is sent from original email address or not. One such fake email service is – Send anonymous Emails from another address

I am not sure whether I logged out of my account in cyber cafe or not?
AnsYou should log into your account on your own pc or anywhere and use remote log out session feature options located at the bottom of your gmail account. You should also change your password if you feel risk or doubt about security.

Using gmail in outlook express is secure ?
AnsYes as long as your computer is up to date with latest windows updates and security software updates.

A lot of older hardware and software were not designed for Windows 7 (or even Vista for that matter), so they may require an update or new driver in order to operate correctly on Windows 7. The decision to provide a Windows 7 driver or update will lie with the developer/manufacturer of the product. The good thing is manufacturers are now releasing Windows 7 drivers for their products. Updating to the latest Windows 7 drivers may help keep your PC running at its best.

The below section lists popular driver and software updates to download for Windows 7. Please feel free to suggest any Windows 7 driver download that I have missed. The list is inspired from about.com and enhanced further.

Acer Drivers (Desktops and Notebooks)

Windows 7 drivers are available for Acer desktops or notebooks, they can be downloaded via Acer’s Service and Support site, linked below. They have not grouped the Windows 7 drivers together. So, I would suggest you to go to this page and select your country from the list. Under Service & Support tab you will see a link for “Driver Download”. Click on that, choose your desktop/notebook/netbook model and select Windows 7 as the OS in the dropdown available. Example link (Acer India site)

Migrate Your Drivers from Vista / XP to Windows 7 With Double Driver

As you might know by now, most of the Windows Vista drivers would work on Windows 7. And if you are looking to migrate those drivers from Windows Vista or XP to Windows 7, then check out Double Driver, which can make the whole process quick and easy. Double Driver makes the backup of all drivers and then pack them all in a compressed zip file.

By default it will detect and select all the recommended drivers, all other listed drivers will be third party drivers installed by various applications or system drivers which you probably won’t need in Windows 7.

Once compressed backup of all drivers is ready, you just need to extract this zip file in Windows 7 and run Driver Backup to restore them instantly. It will restore the drivers one by one and would take some minutes to complete.

How To Identify and Find Drivers for Unknown Devices in Windows

Device driver installation and maintenance has always been an headache for many Windows users all the while, be it in Windows 95 or Windows Vista. Especially while migrating from Vista or XP to Windows 7, one might have come across various problems pertaining to device identification and driver maintenance. It has been a common complaint that Windows fails to identify the device installed or connected to the computer, and Windows cannot or unable to find proper or correct driver for the device.

In Device Manager, the device will be listed as unknown device with yellow question mark. Check the image below for instance.

In the case of any unidentified, unknown or no-driver installed devices, user can manually download from Internet or use driver CD to install the driver. However, user has to identify and know what’s the unknown device prior to installing correct driver. Here are some ways to find unknown device drivers in Windows.

Ways to Identify and Find drivers for unknown devices

1. Manually Identify an Unknown Device

This is possibly the toughest way to identify the device. First, we need to find out the device instance ID which is made up of Vendor ID and the Device ID. To find the device instance ID go to Device Manager –> Right click the unknown device –> Properties –> Details.

Now, from the drop down menu select Device Instance Path (Windows Vista & 7)/ Device Instance ID (Windows XP)

It will give you a string value which contains the vendor ID and the Device ID. The string is like this:
PCIVEN_1180&DEV_0592&SUBSYS_02BE1028&REV_124&31FC8C23&0&0BF0
where VEN_1180 is the vendor ID and DEV_0592 is the Device ID. Note down both of them.

Now, go to the PCI Database website at http://www.pcidatabase.com/, an user-supported centralized database of PCI device IDs.

Enter the device ID in the textbox as shown above and click on Search. You must be able to get the details of the device. With the vendor name or manufacturer name found, visit the support website to search and download latest version of device driver for the corresponding device driver.

In case you cannot find the information at PCI database, you can try the alternative websites – http://www.pcisig.com/membership/vid_search/ or http://pciids.sourceforge.net/

2. Unknown Device Identifier software

Unknown Device Identifier enables you to identify the yellow question mark labeled Unknown Devices in Device Manager. And reports you a detailed summary for the manufacturer name, OEM name, device type, device model and even the exact name of the unknown devices. With the collected information, you might contact your hardware manufacturer for support or search the Internet for the corresponding driver with a simple click. With this utility, you might immediately convert your unidentified unknown devices into identified known devices and find proper driver on the Internet and contact the hardware device manufacturer or vender. Known devices recognized by Microsoft Windows will also be analyzed independent of the operating system.

- Identify USB 1.1/2.0/3.0 Device
- Identify IEEE 1394 Device
- Identify ISA Plug&Play Device
- Identify AGP Bus Device
- Identify PCI, PCI-E, eSATA Device
- Multilingual interface: English, French
- Find Drivers for Hardware Devices
- Contact Hardware Vender directly
- Save or Print Hardware information

Download Unknown Device Identifier or here

3. Unknown Devices

Unknown Devices utility helps users find what those unknown devices in Device Manager really are. By checking Device Manager for unknown devices and extracting information from it, the program attempts to figure out what the device is, so that users do not have to open the PC casing or look up random numbers off of PCI cards to figure out what they are.

Unknown Devices supports Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98 SE, Windows Me, Windows 2K, Windows XP, Windows 2003 (but not Windows NT), with beta version supports Windows Vista, and possibly Windows 7. Unknown Devices is portable and does not require installation, so it runs fine from a CD or floppy. Unknown Devices is available for free download.
